How Do They Get Aerial Banner Ads Launched?

Remember something like this? You are lying on a beach or attending a music or sports event and suddenly you hear the drone of an airplane. You look up and see a banner floating toward you. It displays a message that you might still be able to remember. This method is called airplane advertising and is very effective.

Getting this banner into the air is no easy trick. If it were attached to the plane before take off, then it could be damaged dragging it along the runway. This would also cause drag, making take off more difficult.

To get the banner flying behind the plane requires a skillful pilot, good materials, and a plan. First, the pilot takes off without the banner but with a long hook called a “grapnel hook” attached to the tail of the plane with the hook end secured in the pilot’s window.

Once the airplane is airborne, the pilot releases the hook from his window and lets it fall. The hook falls below the plane and is ready for the next part. Meanwhile, on the ground the banner is folded up, but it has a lead pole attached to the front. A harness is attached to that and a pick up rope to that. Finally a loop of rope connected to the lead rope is draped between two poles about five or six feet off the ground.

Now the plane with the hook below flies low over the area where the loop of rope from the air banner is stretched between the poles. He is hoping to snag the loop with his hook, pulling the banner into the sky. At the moment he reaches the pick up area, he throttles the engine and pulls back on the stick, and the plane soars upward at a steep angle. The hook drags over the loop snagging it. This pulls the banner off the ground and into the sky without dragging it on the ground. And what if his hook misses? He will circle around and try again.

How do they keep the banner straight and not acting like a spiraling kite? The bottom of the banner is weighted so that it is always down. The end of it also has tiny parachutes that keep it stretched out. Banners could be up to fifty letters long and when you consider the letters are seven feet tall, that is a long banner to pull! It takes skill and practice to do it just right.

When he has completed his promised passes over the designated area, the pilot flies the banner back to the drop off place, comes in low, and, at the right place, remotely unhooks the banner so that it can float to the ground unharmed, ready for use again if this is appropriate.

Some larger planes have developed a method of taking off with the banner behind, being careful not to damage it before it is airborne. But the small prop planes are still using the above method to get the banner into the air safely.

All this may seem like a lot of trouble, but the result is worth the effort. Thousands will see the banner, both at the event and on the way to and from it. The message will get out and people will be influenced by the message. The advantage of Mind Maps for stimulating the thought process around finding a new career path lies in its spatial design and use of associative imagery. Mind Maps, therefore, give individuals the ability to literally “map out” their thoughts surrounding a subject in a manner that is intuitive to his or her natural thought process. As a result, Mind Mapping offers those looking to make a career change an effective and creative tool for finding the perfect new job.

What is Mind Mapping Software?

Mind Mapping software is any software that is used to create diagrams, pictures, and other graphic visuals in order to show the relationship between ideas or other types of information. With Mind Maps, the key topic or main idea of the information being presented is represented by a central image, located in the center of the map. Any themes surrounding the main idea are shown on “branches” that are attached to the central topic, with subsequent themes of less importance attached by “child branches” or “twigs”. Imagine, as an example, a man who isn’t quite happy with his current position. Hoping to find a job that he is more suited for and enjoys, he now decides to use Mind Mapping to help him “map out” a new career path. He begins his Mind Map by placing a graphic representing his perfect job in the map’s center. He then attaches two “branches” to the central image, one representing his strengths and one representing things he enjoys doing. He continues by dividing each “branch” into two sections, labeled “personal” and “professional”, via “child branches”. He then lists any his professional and personal strengths, as well as work task and personal activities he enjoys, on “twigs” attached to the appropriate “child branch”. On more “twigs”, he lists jobs that he feels would best compliment his strengths and likes, either personal or professional. As the man brainstorms concerning the perfect job, he makes sure to use images and colors to make his map more intuitive. The attached Mind Map shows how his diagram might look as he is constructing it.

Picking the Perfect Job

When the man is done constructing his map, he is left with a list of jobs that, he feels, best suit his overall strengths and likes. As a result, he now has a clear and focused direction for his job search. He picks the job from those on his list that most interests him, knowing that he is likely to find a career path for which he is well suited. Mind Mapping, thus, allowed him to go through the process of thinking through options for changing career paths, facilitating his quest for the perfect job.
